Mini Review: The Truth About Twinkie Pie

This is my first mini review! It’s for books I want to review, but I don’t have enough material to write a full review for.

There’s something about asking for Impossible Things. For one little second, they feel Possible.
Take two sisters making it on their own: brainy twelve-year-old GiGi and junior-high-dropout-turned-hairstylist DiDi. Add a million dollars in prize money from a national cooking contest and a move from the trailer parks of South Carolina to the North Shore of Long Island. Mix in a fancy new school, new friends and enemies, a first crush, and a generous sprinkling of family secrets.
That’s the recipe for The Truth About Twinkie Pie, a voice-driven middle-grade debut about the true meaning of family and friendship.

I almost DNFed this book at first. It seemed like a mess of contemporary clichés: outcast protagonist, Random Capitalized Words, “quirky” voice, and the like. Despite all that, I kept reading, and it turned out to be fairly unique, giving its stock characters enough personality to drive the story well. The plot picked up quickly, and didn’t let go until the very end.

One thin I absolutely HATED was the big twist at the end that DiDi is GiGi’s mother. It contradicted much of the previously established information, and felt like it just came out of nowhere.
